Get Reading! 50 Books You Can’t Put Down

This year’s Get Reading! campaign, an initiative of the Federal Government, has been launched, including the brochure 50 Books You Can’t Put Down. Now in its ninth year (it was previously called Books Alive), the campaign runs from 25th August to 30th September 2010 and aims to encourage Australians to read. The top fifty books are chosen carefully to showcase some page-turners written by both local and international authors in various categories, to interest people of all ages and with all types of interests. They all have one thing in common, though: they’re intriguing books that you, well, can’t put down! The other ...

Painkillers cause more Headaches for Consumers

The consumer group CHOICE tell us that taking more than 10 to 15 painkillers a month can actually make headaches worse. CHOICE has also questioned claims by drug manufacturers that some over-the-counter analgesic medications can target different parts of the body. Whilst over-the-counter analgesic medications such as paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen can provide temporary relief from headaches, doctors are increasingly seeing the effects of overuse. CHOICE has found that taking as little as ten doses of over-the-counter pain medications in a month can actually increase the frequency and severity of headaches, a condition known as medication overuse headache (MOH). A diagnosis of ...

In addition to the health benefits, bike riding has become a popular social activity with bicycle clubs established in every state and territory of Australia. More than 1.9 million Australians are involved in recreational bike riding and on Sunday 17th October, more than 16,000 of them are expected to assemble in Melbourne for the country's largest ...

Because I am a Girl I can Change the World!

What was the biggest challenge you faced as a girl? Perhaps like me you had health issues, or maybe a learning disability, or you were bullied at school. Maybe you came from an economically disadvantaged background, a broken home, or a dysfunctional family. Or maybe, your biggest challenge was negotiating your way through high school. Think about it and then imagine that you had to overcome these challenges not as a citizen of an affluent nation such as Australia, but as a citizen of a developing country where you are denied access to health care, education, adequate ...
